My name is Kathy and I’m from the beautiful rolling hills of western Pennsylvania. I’m just an average girl with a quiet life who lives in a cozy cottage with a loyal dog.  Motherhood is my greatest occupation and this is my story.  It all started with routine blood work in December of 2014, when my cholesterol numbers came back high and my primary care physician immediately wanted to put me on medicine.  But in my mind, these numbers just didn’t add up.  While I don’t run marathons or spend copious sweaty hours at the gym, I do keep active, practice yoga and have always been mindful of my food.  Instead of jumping on the pharmaceutical bandwagon, I set to work and did some research.   Becoming my own best advocate for my health & well being has been an unexpected experience of self exploration and a thruway to a better life.  The joy of my journey has inspired me to tell my story and share my discovery of Functional Medicine and the balance it has brought to my existence.

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”   ~ Mary Oliver

  1. Hi Kathy,

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog earlier — lovely to “meet” you! Reading a bit more about your journey and how similar mine has been as well, it really struck me yet again just how many people struggle with these very same issues and face the same uncertainties, confusion, and pharmaceutical bombardment when sometimes the solution is much more simple… So glad to hear you found your way to health.

      1. Hi Kathleen, Unfortunately Dr. Hyman is the one physician at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine who does NOT accept insurance. Also, he only sees patients one day per month, so he is ~extremely~ hard to get an appointment with. The good news is that there are many other doctors and nutritionists within the functional medicine department who DO accept insurance and have all trained under Dr. Hyman. I see Dr. Young and love her. You can’t go wrong with any of them. You’re going to love this philosophy of medicine! Good luck. 🙂

  3. Kathy, I am so glad to meet you! I was diagnosed with RA a year ago and after trying traditional medicines for 8 months with their side effects being worse than my disease, I decided to stop taking them. Now I am working with a nutritional therapist and I am positive that this will work! I will be keen to follow your blog!

  4. Functional medicine is evolving and will likely replace the traditional allopathic approach. Seeking ROOT CAUSES is essential to helping restore the body to a state of balance and good health. Functional medicine is NOT a magic bullet, but it is a wonderful component in providing better answers that fulfill a larger component in better health than traditional western medicine. I’m glad you’ve been exposed to this form health care.

    1. I hope that one day it WILL replace the traditional approach. It has turned my health around! I give thanks every day for the courage I found to follow my heart and take the road less traveled.

  5. Your words will help others lacking confidence in the ongoing maintenance of their chronic diseases to reach out seeking alternative pathways to restoring health to their bodies. As a physician with a similar philosophy to attaining and maintaining health, I believe this approach will gain greater acceptance quickly.
